The South African Council for Natural Scientific Professions (SACNASP) is a statutory Council responsible for the
registration and regulation of natural scientists in different fields of practices. One of the key strategic objectives
of SACNASP is to promote professional development through lifelong learning in the natural science sector
through Continuing Professional Development (CPD). The focus of the discussion will be on determining the role
that stakeholders can play in supporting natural scientists’ lifelong learning, and the benefits. In this context,
the following questions can arise: Can CPD be used as a tool for career progression in face of rapid expansion of
scientific and technological knowledge? Will CPD ensure a lifelong career through upskilling, access to knowledge
and the ability to adapt to new and novel approaches? Furthermore, can stakeholders use CPD as a vehicle to stay
ahead of competitors and improve productivity? The key deliverable of this session is to provide an opportunity for
all participants to highlight the role that CPD can play in the interests of scientists, the natural science profession
and in the broader context of its contribution to society.
