IMPACT OF SHALE GAS DEVELOPMENT IN SA UNDER SPOTLIGHT

The country’s readiness to support the shale gas industry will come under the spotlight during a two-day conference scheduled to take place in Port Elizabeth from 31 August to 1 September.

Hosted by the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) in partnership with the Department of Science and Technology (DST), the conference aims to highlight critical national reports on shale gas in South Africa, analyse the regulatory environment, consolidate common findings and recommendations, and provide a platform for debate.

The ASSAf report, South Africa’s Technical Readiness to support the Shale Gas Industry, and the Department of Environmental Affairs report, Shale Gas Development in the Central Karoo: A Scientific Assessment of the Opportunities and Risks, will be highlighted.

The two-day event is expected to attract 150 key stakeholders from government, industry and academia. Delegates from other African countries and further abroad will also attend the conference.

The Director-General of Science and Technology, Dr Phil Mjwara, will address the opening session of the event on 31 August 2017.
