- Academy development highlighted
Academy development in southern Africa enjoyed high-level attention at a joint ministerial meeting and workshop in Swaziland recently. Some 50 delegates from 15 Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries attended the Joint Meeting of Ministers Responsible for Education and Training, Science Technology and Innovation on 20 and 21 June 2017.

The Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAf) and the UK Academy of Medical Sciences have launched two reports (synopsis and proceedings) and an animation on multimorbidity in South Africa. Throughout the world, as life expectancy increases, the population incidence of non-communicable diseases (NCDs) is also increasing. In addition, communicable diseases continue to affect millions of people every year.

The border-jumping Ebola outbreak and development of the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) radio telescope prove science diplomacy is essential for Africa. A workshop in Namibia, co-organised by the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS), explored the challenges and the rich potential.
