The purpose of this Second Presidential Roundtable is to bring together the best minds in the country, with some international participation, to make sense of these presumed cultural shifts on campuses and to ask what these tendencies might mean for the future of the academy in South Africa. Do these events represent momentary or more permanent shifts in campus cultures? Do such changes signal dismal futures or are they understandable reactions to settled violences on campuses? How should such tendencies – incivility, intolerance and violence – be understood and engaged, if at all possible? Are current arrangements for critical engagement in fact placing professorial voices at an advantage in that the appeal to reason and rational discourse favours those with the intellectual resources to engage on those terms? And could a more systematic study (consensus study, in Academy terms) of campus cultures since the new protest movement started (2015) be helpful in understanding the present and guiding the future?
