What is Professional Registration?

Professional registration is an important career milestone for scientists. It shows that you’re a professional and have the technical competence which is  valued by industry.

Professional registration identifies you as a highly skilled professional with technical knowledge and competence. Once you have gained professional registration you may use letters after your name to identify yourself, e.g. M.E. Jones Pr.Sci.Nat.

What are the benefits of professional registration?

  • Indicating that your competence and commitment to professionalism have been assessed by other natural science professionals.
  • Recognition that you have received education and training that meets standards for knowledge and experience.
  • Acknowledgement of professional standing by peers and colleagues.
  • Identifying you as having competences that employers value.
  •  Higher earnings, better employment prospects and career mobility.
  • Access to a network of qualified professionals in your area of expertise, so you keep abreast of the latest developments.

Application for registration

Qualifications and experience and proven competence determine the category of registration.

The initial step in registration is to complete and submit the application. Your application must show that your education and experience will make you eligible for registration in the category and field of practice for which registration is required.  It is, therefore, most important that your application furnish sufficient detail to enable the Council to make an adequate appraisal.

All directions must be followed. Failure to complete all parts of the application or failure to provide all of the necessary details will delay the processing of your application.  After the Council has reviewed and evaluated your application, you will be notified with regard to the outcome.

SACNASP sets the standards for registration and keeps the Register of professional natural scientists.

Registration is open to all natural science professionals who can demonstrate competence to perform professional work to the necessary standards, and commitment to:

  • Maintain that competence
  • Work within professional codes
  • Participate actively within the profession
